Ephrata was initially established as a train stop for the Great Northern Railroad, it was considered simply a water stop for trains passing thru. The town stayed rather small until 1933 when construction began on the Grand Coulee Dam, which transformed the community into a government town, and brought with it many new residents.
Ephrata now offers many outdoor activities during the summer months, including Spalshzone-Community pool park, live music at Basin Summer Sounds, and the Beezley Burn mountain bike trail.
