Visiting Spokane

Eastern Washington state eagerly awaits the warmer weather of spring and summer. Winter wore out its welcome in Spokane. Spring flowers are poking up and the Spokane River is raging with whitewater, beckoning water sports enthusiasts. Spokane's four distinct seasons are celebrated with unique and distinct events that welcome visitors and travelers. Bloomsday is spring's largest festival heralding the season of outdoor activities and fun. Featuring a timed 12K event, with cash prizes for winners, this is a popular event drawing elite runners from across the globe. The Best Western Peppertree Airport Inn in Spokane, is five minutes from the airport with ideal accommodations for travelers to the race.

Spokane's Hoopfest is billed as the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament on the planet. Held on the streets of Spokane, covering 40 city blocks, it is a basketball event like no other. Hoopfest, held June 26th and 27th, is geared for athletes of all ages and abilities. Over 3,000 Spokane resident volunteers welcome basketball professionals, aspiring professionals and dreamers to Hoopfest. Players and fans enjoy the local foodfest in Riverfront Park, and kids will enjoy the Safeco Zone and keep busy having fun.

Hoopfest is a great beginning or end to a vacation in Eastern Washington. While you are on the road, take advantage of the many outdoor recreation opportunities and make a vacation out of it. It is football season for the Spokane Shock, the city's arena football team. The Shock are the defending Arena Cup Champions. Regular season games are played through July at the Spokane Arena. Rising in popularity, arena football has a solid fan base, particularly the Shock who are league leaders. Games make a great night out, and one of the few good reasons to go inside during summer.

Spokane is the cultural and arts center for northeast Washington, and summer brings events outdoors. MAC, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture sponsors ArtFest 2010 June 4th through 6th. The 25th anniversary event will be held just west of downtown Spokane, at Coeur d'Alene Park. Beyond three days showcasing the best local and regional art and fine hand crafted works, there are programs and activities for everyone. Don't miss the live musical performances, food booths and the popular children's hands-on art making zone.

Did you know that Spokane is where Father's Day first originated? The 100th Anniversary of Father's Day is June 2010, and the Spokane Symphony will be celebrating on June 20th. Families come down to the parking lot prior to the concert for ice cream and hotdogs and join in the festivities. The concert is the third of Best Fest, which includes; The Best of the Classics concert on June 18th, and The Best of Stage and Screen on June 19th. Best Fest is a new summer fundraiser for the Symphony showcasing their talent. There will be a wine tasting event prior to the concert on the 18th and a beer brewers tasting before the 19th. Summer will be exciting this year in Spokane, check your calendars and stay a few days to enjoy the city's special events.
